Blurb:

She’s roses, he’s rough-and-ready rawhide. Kim Martin is hardly equipped for a Colorado camping trip, especially when her mountain guide is a rough-edged cowboy who is as untamed as the wilderness.

Thad Winchester’s patience for city women is wearing as thin as the seat of his jeans. But there is something about Kim that puts his hard-and-fast don’t-touch rule to the test.

Guest Post

Thank you, Arianne, for hosting me today at Provocative Pages. What a great blog! I am so happy to be here and share with your readers a story about my book, Rawhide and Roses, which is one of the books in the UNFORGETTABLE HEROES boxed set.

For those of you who may not have yet read Rawhide and Roses, let me give you the overall premise. Kim and Jillie, best friends and teachers, are on summer break, and attending a conference in Colorado. Before Kim realizes it, Jillie has tricked her into a week-long pack trip into the mountains, complete with pack mules, cowboys, and an Alpha trail boss who gives Kim a run for her money. Of course, the trail boss, gruff cowboy Thad Winchester, doesn’t know what he’s in for with the spunky Kim. And from the moment she falls off her horse and lands literally at his feet, er boots, their story begins.

Rawhide and Roses was a book was born out of some actual events that happened to me, when a fellow teacher and I attended a conference in the Colorado Rockies—just like Kim and Jillie. My friend was an accomplished horsewoman. Me, not so much. But I agreed to a four hour trail ride into the mountains, figuring it’s a trail ride, a tourist thing…how difficult could it be?

Well, difficult. It wasn’t so much fun.

Although I didn’t fall off my horse like Kim, I feared I was going to several times. The signals I gave to my horse were obviously the wrong ones, because she’d want to back up, when I wanted to move forward. My friend kept saying, “Keep your horse’s nose in the tail of the horse in front of you!” The thing was, the woman riding in front of me would let her horse stop to eat, then she’d gallop ahead, and my horse would take off like lightning looking for her tail!

I have to admit I was a bit frightened, and probably made quite a spectacle of myself.

My friend, who was trying to calm me when I did just what Kim does in the book—threaten to get off and lead the horse down the mountain—said exactly what Jillie said to Kim— “If you think you are going to lead a thousand pounds of horseflesh down this mountain…”  Well, I didn’t. And I made it back down the mountain just fine. Saddle sore, yes. Pride bruised a little. Oh yes. And even though I didn’t get tricked into a long pack trip with a host of hunky cowboys, I did get a story, and my first book sale! Rawhide and Roses was originally released by Kensington Books back in 1997, under the title The Wild West by Kim Whalen, which was my writing name at the time. (I became Maddie James in the year 2000). I’ve revised it and even added a few scenes since then, and re-released it under my own publishing house, Turquoise Morning Press.

A number of readers of Rawhide and Roses have written to ask me when Jillie’s story is coming out. Years ago I did start writing the sequel to Kim and Thad’s story, and it was lost in a big computer malfunction! Over time, other writing projects took over and poor Jillie and Mack hung in limbo like the un-downloaded pictures in my digital camera. But that is going to change. Mack and Jillie (original title, eh?) will release summer, 2014. I know it’s been a long wait, and I’m working to get their story out to you as fast as I can! (You can see the cover on my website).

In the meantime, have you read Broken? If not, it might be the perfect cowboy romance to tide you over until Mack and Jillie is released. Enjoy!

Before I leave, I just have to give a plug for all of my fellow authors in the UNFORGETTABL HEROES boxed set. The seven other stories in the set are written by the most talented authors I know. If you decide to get this set for your very own, I don’t believe you will be disappointed. Each and every story is unique, well-written, and definitely will keep you engaged. How can you resist eight unforgettable stories with heroes to die for, all for 99 cents?

Again, many thanks for hosting me today, Arianne! I look forward to visiting often.

  2. Arianne, love this blog!!! How cute is that header?! And thank you for featuring my fellow TMP author Maddie James on your site.

Maddie, I loved this post, since I'm more like Jillie (the experienced horse rider.) I've given many pointers to beginner riders before, including the one about keeping your horse's nose in the horse's tail in front of you. I love Rawhide and Roses and I especially LOVE that there will be a sequel!
