Interview Time

Kayla: Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Elizabeth: Let’s see, I grew up in Torrance, California and moved to the east coast when I was thirteen. I live in Delaware currently with my min. schnauzer, Sherlock Holmes, and Egyptian mau, Ahmemotep (Memo for short). I have been writing since I was little, but did realize it was my passion until I was in my early 20’s. For the longest time I wanted to be a Broadway actress! Haha. I have a supportive family and friends that listen to me rant and rave like an insane person when I get writer’s block. I couldn’t have more fun being me most of the time.

Kayla: What was it like getting your first book "Vampyre Kisses" published?

Elizabeth: Exciting at first until I learned a better way to do it. Self publishing with a company and paying them to do it is just not for me. Especially when I have to depend on them to give me my sells information and pay me, yet they get a percentage for doing nothing after the cover and editing is done with the book. This is why I decided to go the indie route and create my own small publishing business. I do everything myself, except for the cover and editing. However, I do come up with the concept for the cover, but there is no way I could do it without my graphic designer Stephanie Fox. She is amazing! Lots of self-publishing companies have gotten bad names for themselves and I now see why. However, there is this thing I have coined “first book syndrome”. When a writer is just so excited about getting the book published that they don’t research and educate themselves on the process and how they could do it better. I went through this and watch other go through it. I write blog articles on the time trying to warn new authors, but it’s not easy to get through to people sometimes. Vampyre Kisses is currently being republished through my own company, Third Broom on the Left Press, (like Werewolf Descent was) and that’s why it’s only available in the eBook version currently. But in a month it will be back up under my own name. That’s when I will truly be over the moon!
Kayla: What do you love about being an Author?

Elizabeth: It’s funny, I was just thinking about this the other day. I just love the writing. Of course there are dozens of other parts I love: marketing, fans, getting invites to speak, reading, researching, etc etc. However, when I was sitting on my couch writing this past weekend all I could think about was how much fun it is to develop the plot and speak to the characters about what should happen next. I get to create this world that is different from anything else and to me it is real. Writing for me is breathing and when I can’t write I can’t breathe.

Kayla: What projects are you working on?

Elizabeth: I am done with the third book in the Last Witch Series, Witch Devotions. It just needs a cover and will be out in September. Of course I am working on the fourth book. You are the first one to be in on this…The fourth book is going to deal with demons. Hehe. New territory and my mother worries about me researching such areas, but I must do it. Also, I will be coming out with an anthology book this August called “The Girls Who Cried Werewolf”. It will entail my own story that concentrates on Zou Tai from The Last Witch Series and his back-story. I’m actually almost done that story. Along with that I have two other novellas I am keeping under wraps because I don’t know where they are going yet.

Kayla: Which of your books was you favorite to write?

Elizabeth: Witch Devotions. Hands down. It’s easy for me to say this because Witch Devotions oddly came about when my father passed away a year ago, the main character, Faith, actually ended up going through a hard death like I was. I pour a lot of my emotions and what I went through personally into this story (in a way). And yes it is a PNR fantasy, but I think I was really able to show her sorrow because of what I was personally going through. The descriptions and metaphors struck me easily at some points and at others I got terribly stuck and felt destoryed. However, the book got done and I am more than happy with the way it turned out and I think the readers are going to love what I did at the end.

Kayla: How did you get the idea for The Last Witch Series?

Elizabeth: I don’t think there was one think got me writing Vampyre Kisses, the first book. I just loved to write since I was little and I started this series not knowing what was going to happen with the book. Everything sort of played out, and is still playing out, as if it is fate or my destiny. I love that I have been able to find my passion and life and do something with it.

Kayla: What is your favorite part of being an Author?

Elizabeth: Inspiring people. I stated from the beginning when I decided to publish the first book that even if I didn’t make money off of my stories, if I could just inspire someone the way Tamora Pierce inspired me I would be happy. The first time I got that email from a reader I felt this sense of warmth over come me and now I write to continue to inspire others to follow there dreams. I didn’t have the easiest life and I believe that no matter who you are or where you come from you have chances to make your dreams come true. It just takes hard work!

Kayla: If you could explain The Last Witch Series is four words what would they be?
Elizabeth: Paranormal. Love. Action. Magic.

A year after Vampyre Kisses came out Elizabeth J. Kolodziej makes her way back into the author scene with the second book for the The Last Witch Series, Werewolf Descent. Currently, Kolodziej (pronounced KO-LA-G), is working on many different short stories for anthology books. Along with the third book for The Last Witch Series being under way. Kolodziej continues to travel and study the folklore of vampires, werewolves and witches in the hopes of expanding her knowledge and her stories.

This is what Elizabeth wrote in my signed copy of Vampyre Kisses: Kayla. When life sucks, bite back. Hard.
I love this quote Elizabeth, and I wish you the best with everything, thanks so much for sharing the news about your newest project :)

Deadly Vices #2

-Only $3.99 for an E-Copy, this book is worth way more than that, so grab it while you can!
RĂ©mi Whitedeer, police officer turned substance-abuse counselor, dreams of restoring order to his tribe. Violence and crime are rampant throughout the unpoliced Iro
quois reserve, and a civil war is brewing between the Guardians, a militant traditionalist group, and other tribal factions. As the mixed-race cousin of the Guardians’ leader, RĂ©mi is caught in a no-man’s land—several groups lay claim to him, but all want him to deny his white blood.

A maverick cop on an anti-drug crusade.
When she infiltrated the Vipers to take down the leader of the outlaw biker gang responsible for her brother’s death, police sergeant Alyssa Morgan got her man. But her superiors think she went too far. Her disregard for protocol and her ends-justify-the-means ethics have branded her an unreliable maverick. To salvage her career, she accepts an assignment to set up a squad of native provincial officers on a reserve.
A radical sovereigntist bent on freeing a nation.

Decades of government oppression threaten the existence of the Iroquois Nation. But one man, Chaz Whitedeer, is determined to save his people no matter what the price, even if it means delving into the shadowy world of organized crime.

When RĂ©mi and Alyssa uncover the Guardians’ drug-fueled scheme to fund their fight for true autonomy—a scheme involving the Vipers—RĂ©mi must choose between loyalty to family and tribe or his growing love for Alyssa.

Can RĂ©mi and Alyssa leave everything behind—even their very identities—for a future together?

My Review:
When you take a fiesty cop and an ex-cop both reaching for their own goals you get a really banging book! I have been anticipating this book ever since I finished the last page of the first book "Deadly Obsession". If I could give this book a rating higher than 5 I definitely would. Kristine has once again captured me with not only an action packed mystery, but also a touching romance full of heat.
Remi's character was my favorite, I love how caring he is and how he is always looking out for everyone. Despite the hardships he went through when he was a little boy, he doesn't act like a victim. I like that Remi is a fighter, and he fights for what he wants including Alyssa who is an SQ COP, not only that but she is WHITE... which is a big problem/ NO NO on the reserve. When you read Deadly Addiction you will find out why, so I won't ruin it for you. I DID NOT like Chaz... he made me so angry that I wanted to take him out myself. I'll say he is a phenomenal villan. This story was so complex, with different points of views told which I really enjoyed. I like that I always knew what was going on in everyone's heads, and I love the depth of Kristine's books and the world she created. Alyssa also has a past with the Vipers (a gang) because they killed her brother and she wanted revenge. Alyssa went through a lot gaining their trust and busting them which makes it really hard to uncover the mystery of drugs on the reserve. While uncovering this mystery with Remi they are both faced with each other's pasts... The ending left me like WHAT? Really? I want to know more!! It was so fun reading this book, I stayed up late late reading it because I couldn't put it down, I just had to know what was going to happen next.

Remi and Alyssa have so much chemistry and attraction to each other that it was hard to even read about them because there was so much sexual tension, and I kept thinking JUST KISS ALREADY! But, let me tell you the tension is totally worth it ;) *wink wink*
DEFINITELY READ THIS BOOK! I would recommend this to anyone who loves romance and mystery. I had never read any mystery books until I read Kristine's books and now I am hooked!

Question: Have you had a character that disappointed you? One that you fell in love with and then “broke up” with later on in either the series or a stand-alone book? Tell us about him or her.

Answer: Yes! Erik from The House of Night Series by P.C. Cast. I started off loving him, being the older hot guy and all. He was so sweet to Zoey and then as the books progress he turns into a total freaking jerk! I mean he gets a little better in the rest of the series but I always think of how big of a dick he was to Zoey and I could never look at him the same way.

Publisher: Crescent Moon Publishing

Amazon/Barnes & Noble

Can you live without your computer? Can you wear a watch? Do you know anyone who can't?

In a time not long from now, there are people whose life paths are determined by such simple details. Legally recognized as electromagnetics, or "Readers", they are a twist in evolution, an anomaly in a society that has become technologically dependent. Considered second-class citizens because of their heightened electromagnetic fields, Readers can't wear watches, get too close to a TV, or even drive for fear they will shut down the car's electrical system. Computers become worthless doorstops quickly around Readers. Career prospects are limited.

Reader Jeanne Muir decides to expand her horizons when she's unexpectedly offered a new job opportunity. But she hasn't been told that her job description includes being framed for a crime she didn't commit. Because Readers are not held in high esteem, Jeanne's an easy scapegoat, and law enforcement definitely is not on her side. Knowing she was set up and the odds are against her, Jeanne can't let herself be taken in-and risks asking mysterious, sexy Ran Owata, a fellow Reader who is no longer accepted among their kind, for help. The problem is: Can she trust him? Does she have a choice?

Interview

Kayla:

Why do you like to write fantasy?

Eilis: Building worlds and interesting people that have nothing to do with this reality, giving them challenges and abilities to overcome them!

Kayla: What was the process of becoming published like for you?

Eilis: It was long and arduous and dispiriting. If not for the fact that I like telling stories, I would have given it up. But you have to take it day by day, keep writing the stories you want to tell. By the time I got my first email asking for THE SLEEPER AWAKES and FESTIVAL OF STARS (for Ellora’s Cave’s Cerridwen Press), I had had rejections for both of those stories for a decade. So it took a while, but I got there.

Kayla: Are you working on any projects currently?

Eilis: I am! It’s a combination of super-heroes, a comatose woman, and a mystery, and a romance that binds them all. It’s in the same world as my super heroine romance INTRODUCING SONIKA, but there are no superheroes in it. For the most part.

Kayla: What has been your favorite character to write about?

Eilis: Sonika, the super heroine, was the one that came easiest and quickest, mainly because I grew up reading comic books, I wrote comic books, and I even worked (briefly) in the industry. Jeanne Muir, the heroine of STATIC SHOCK, is a close second, because she’s a smart ass but she’s a survivor, even though she has to figure out what she’s got to do to get out of the mess she’s been placed in.

Kayla:
What do you think about Book Bloggers?

Eilis: Bless their hearts! Love ‘em. They’re reading at a time when a lot of people aren’t.

Kayla: Do you like to write during the day or night?

Eilis: If I had my druthers I’d write in the morning, but I have a dayjob, so I write in the afternoon. I wake up at 5am, and that lets me figure out what I’ll be writing about later, whether it’s the current story, or a blog post, or something else.

Kayla: Where is your favorite place to write?

Eilis: My office. It’s messy and comfy, but it allows me to focus. Although it’s gotten to be messy enough that I’ve started to reorganize. I always tell myself I’m going to organize once I finish a project, but there’s always another project that’s hanging over my head, so it gets put off again. But I’m starting to lose things in the piles, and that’s not good.

Kayla:
What do you think about self-publishing vs. traditional publishing?

Eilis: Self-publishing allows you to expand your horizons. But you do have to make sure it’s as polished and professional as possible. I have a workshop I present with my friend Jacquie Rogers about the faeries and dragon myths around the world, and inspired by all the research I did for my part, I wrote a novella that I self-published, THE RIDDLE OF RYU. I’m a professional editor in my day job, and I’m the first to tell you that even professionals need to have others go over their work.

Eilis Flynn has worked at a comic book company, a couple of Wall Street brokerage firms, a wire service, and a magazine for futurists. She’s written a variety of things that don’t seem to belong together, but they do: comic book stories both online and in print, scholarly works in a previous life as a scholar, book reviews and interviews, and articles about finance (at odds with her anthropology background), before settling down to write romantic fantasies about the reality beyond what we can see. She lives in Washington state and can be reached at http://www.blogger.com/www.eilisflynn.com

Above is Eilis' latest release Static Stock, be sure to go check it out and possibly buy it! Thanks so much for this Interview Eilis, I really appreciate it and wish you all the best. Thanks everyone for stopping by and reading this, feel free to leave comments I would love to read and respond! I am sure Eilis would love reading them too.

The Vampire Diaries Discussion (Episode 19)

Okay, so now I think it's safe to say that everyone has watched the latest episode of The Vampire Diaries. Right? Well if you haven't beware of the major spoilers that will be down below...

What did you guys think about this episode?? It was so crazy for me.. Here are my thoughts. First off I was so excited for #TVD on Thursday I mean going weeks without watching it drove me mad! I don't know how I will ever get through the summer. Anyways, we all know Elena has feelings for Damon even if she tries to hide it, I am a die hard Stefan fan but I was rooting for Damon and Elena in this episode. Some shockers for me were when Elena kisses Damon, she actually freaking kisses him... and then Jeremy catches them (awkward). When Rose shows up and is rooting for Damon and Elena too, she makes Jeremy see what she sees going on between Damon and Elena. I got so mad at Tyler for getting mad over Klaus' drawing like that. Okay, so I understand why he would be mad but he should have taken it out on Klaus NOT Caroline. And then for the BIG SHOCKER.... Esther going into Rebecca's body... Holy shit, this had me like OMG! She is siding with Alaric's creepy vampire hating alter ego and they are going to destroy everything. I can't wait to see where the next episode goes!!

What about you guys, what did you think of this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries?? I would love to know so I could have someone to talk to about it!!

Revenge by Dana Delamar (Review)

Revenge
Blood and Honor #1Dana Delamar
Publisher: Self Published
Release Date: January 1, 2012
Pages: 302
Buy Here:
Amazon/Barnes & Noble

Kate Andretti is married to the Mob—but doesn’t know it. When her husband uproots them to Italy, Kate leaves everything she knows behind. Alone in a foreign land, she finds herself locked in a battle for her life against a husband and a family who will “silence” her if she will not do as they wish. When her husband tries to kill her, she accepts the protection offered by a wealthy businessman with Mafia ties. He’s not a mobster, he claims. Or is he?

Enrico Lucchesi never wanted to be a Mafia don, and now he’s caught in the middle of a blood feud with the Andretti family. His decision to help Kate brings the feud between the families to a boil. Attacks from without and within push them both to the breaking point, and soon Enrico is forced to choose between protecting the only world he knows and saving the woman he loves.

My Review:
Here is to a WHOOPING 5 Stars. If I had to describe this book in about 4 words it would be action-packed, sexy, romantic, and adrenaline rushing. I had someone point out that this reminded them of a movie and after reading this I can now say this would make a kick butt movie! There were times when I was fanning myself, sitting on the edge of my seat, and so mad I had to put it down. The steamy scenes were oh so delicious!

This book is all about Enrico Luccshesi, doesn't that name just sound sexy? He is the head of the Lucchesi Mob, and there are many different mob groups. Well, there is a bloody war going on between the Andretti's and the Lucchesi's that stemmed from when Enrico was way younger. I will not tell you the problems that there were because you definitely want to discover them for yourself. Then you throw Kate into the mix, she is a kick butt, independent, strong woman... and she doesn't take crap from no one. Not even Carlo Andretti's (head of the Andretti Mob) nephew Vince. When Vince hits Kate, she knew she had to get away and that's when Enrico and Kate wind up crossing paths!

Now for my feelings on this book. I was a little confused with the vocabulary, about who was who, and who was related to whom? But, let me tell you if you read the vocabulary list in the front of the book it will all start to make sense and then you will be in for the ride of your life. Thank you so so much Dana for asking me to review this! This exceeded my expectations, Revenge was absolutely fabulous. I have never read a book like this before so I didn't know if I would like it BUT I DID, I SO DID! And knowing this is only the 1st book??? WHAT NOW? The ending really killed me, what a cliffhanger. I would have never expected that and now will have to be tortured waiting on Book 2.

I would recommend this to anyone who is a lover of romance, steamy love scenes (AND I'M TALKING JALAPENO HOT!), and action! This is an awesome book and I can't wait to see what's in store for the rest of this series. Be on the lookout for Dana guys, I know I will. And isn't this cover just so awesome? It definitely captures the story!

Question: Fight! Fight! If you could have two fictional characters battle it out (preferably from books), who would they be and who do you think would win?

Answer: Hmm... I've never really given this much thought until now. I think I would have to choose Turquoise Draka from Midnight Predator by Amelia Atwater Rhodes and Limos from Immortal Rider by Larissa Ione... Both of these girls kick some serious ass in their books. I would love to see who would win, but my bet would be on Turquoise from Midnight Predator!

Title: Midnight Predator
Den of Shadows #4Author:Amelia Atwater-Rhodes
Publisher: Laurel Leaf
Release Date: May 14, 2002

Though she was once a happy teenager with a wonderful family and a full life, Turquoise Draka is now a hunter. In a deadly world of vampires, shapeshifters, and mercenaries, she’ll track any prey if the price is right. Her current assignment: to assassinate Jeshikah, one of the cruelest vampires in history. Her employer: an unknown contact who wants the job done fast. Her major obstacle: she’ll have to hide her strength and enter Midnight, a fabled vampire realm, as a human slave. . .

Title: Immortal Rider
Lords of Deliverance #2
Author: Larissa Ione
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing

Sexy, powerful, and immortal, Limos is on a crash course with destiny. She’s been marked as Satan’s bride and her jealous fiancĂ© wants her all to himself. My Review:I haven't read any of Felicity Heaton's books until this one and I was very pleased! Lilah and Javier have an attraction and desire for each other and try to keep it from one another. This is one of the most erotic stories that I have read, I like the fact that it's not just erotic but it's a love story. I got the chance to fall in love with the characters as they fell in love with each other. They risked everything for each other and it turned out good in their favor. Snow taking up for them was a big shocker for me and an exciting twist on the story. Lilah is a strong person, when she stood up to Lord Ashville for Javier it was gut-wrenching because I knew she would survive I just didn't know how.

Covet was a fast paced, blood-rushing, erotic romance story. Felicity Heaton is a great writer. It was a definite pleasure to read this book. I can't wait until the next book comes out because Covet left me needing MORE, I will be buying her next book in this series for sure!

Stud by Cheryl Brooks (Book Review)

Title: Stud
Author: Cheryl Brooks
Cat Star Chronicles #8Publisher: Sourcebooks Cassablanca
Release Date: February 1, 2012
Pages: 416
Rating: Totally Steaming (4/4)

-Note: This was one of my very first reviews when I started blogging, so it's not that good. But, I wanted to share it with you because I really loved this book!!

THEY'RE GALAXIES APART...
Even for a Zetithian, Tarq Zulveidinoe's sexual prowess is legendary. Believing it's all he's good for, Tarq sets out to perpetuate his threatened species by offering his services to women across the galaxy... BUT ONE FORCE CAN BRING THEM TOGETHER... Lucinda Force is the sensitive dark horse in a self-absorbed family, repeatedly told that no man will ever want such a plain woman. Lucy longs for romance, but is resigned to her loveless lot in life-until Tarq walks through the door of her father's restaurant on Talus Five...

My Review:I had originally started reading another book when I picked up Stud. After I started this book, I knew that I wouldn't be able to read anything else until I had finished this book!

It started out with Tarq sitting in a restaurant and and smelling Lucy's scent. From that instant I knew I was in for a good book. There was an instant attraction between Lucy and Tarq. When she asked him what he would like to eat he said "A full order of you." It turns out that Tarq can't read, and he thinks that he is only good for being paid to have sex with other women and getting them pregnant. Tarq has never viewed himself as smart, he always thought of himself as dumb. Tarq escaped from his home place when an asteroid was about to hit his planet. His family along with a lot of other Zetithians died, and there was a shortage in their species. Because of this Tarq decided to go into business of sleeping with women and impregnating them in order to bring back his species.

When he meets Lucy he instantly wants her. Her scent drives him crazy! Lucy is a hard worker, who has been taken for granted all of her life by her family. She works at her father's restaurant and gets paid nothing but lowly tips. I love Lucy's character she is hard working, kind, caring, and she makes the best out of every situation. Lucy has always viewed herself as not being pretty. She thinks that she will never have anyone to spend the rest of her life with until Tarq shows up in her father's restaurant and asks her to call him. Tarq has never asked someone to call him let alone not charge them for his services. Tarq end up sneaking into her father's house and they end up sleeping together. Lucy has never had sex before so this was all very overwhelming to her. She finally ends up getting pregnant and decides to run away from home to Natasha's house.

Lucy thinks she will never be able to hang on to someone like Tarq, after all he is gorgeous and rich stud. Tarq and Lucy both have many insecurities and they complement each other so well! She is weak were he is strong, and he is strong where she is weak. They try to say good-bye to each other many times during this story but always wind up back together. When they end up having to travel through the forest to get to the other side of the mountain they run into Natasha (Lucy's best friend) and her husband. All of the non-human species have been run out of their homes. Lucy and Tarq both keep their feelings to themselves when they really both love each other. When they arrive to the cave Tarq announces that Lucy is "his" mate because he senses that Vertigo is interested in Lucy. Vertigo comes from a species where women can have two mates. Tarq doesn't like it very well, but in the back of his mind he thinks that Vertigo is better suited for Lucy than he is.

They end up staying in a cave for a while and then decide to follow Tarq through the forest because he knows the way. He had a vision of the way to get out. Through this wild ride Lucy and Tarq realize that they both love each other and can't live without each other. At the end Lucy rejects Vertigo's offer to be her second mate. Then Tarq and Lucy reveal their feelings to each other FINALLY.

This whole story had me burning to get to the end. I waned to literally make them tell each other how one another felt! I loved this story, it kept me on the edge of my seat. There are a lot of hot sex scenes! Make sure you are ready to feel hot and bothered because when you read this book you will be. I love the characters! Lucy and Tarq were absolutely made for each other. It was a definite pleasure to read this story and I look forward to reading the rest of this series.

Welcome!

Hey everyone! This is Kayla from Bengal Reads. I was thinking today that I love the Young Adult Genre and I also love the Adult Genre too... So, my solution is to have one blog strictly for Young Adult books and one for Adult books. This is it! I decided to call it "Reading On The Wild Side" because that is the slogan for my other blog. I am so excited to be able to post and talk about Adult books again! I just wanted to make Bengal Reads appropriate for Young Adults. But, I will be posting all of my Romance/Erotica reviews here.

I hope you guys like it! Drop a comment and tell me what you think. Have a wonderful Monday :)
